The U.S. And The Berlin

The Berlin Wall was keeping people in Berlin from freedom to do what they want and to go where they want. The U.S. knew that they had to do something to fix this or Germany would fall apart. The U.S started to protest against the Berlin Wall along with people in Germany. Everyone in Germany wanted the wall to fall. Everyone in the U.S. also wanted the same thing. So in 1987, Ronald Reagan went to West Berlin to do something about it.

Ronald Reagan's Speech

On June 12, 1987, Ronald Reagan spoke to the people of West Berlin including Mikhail Gorbachev. Ronald Reagan challenged Gorbachev to take down the wall. Reagan explained how the destruction of the Berlin Wall would benefit Germany. Reagan said the destruction would set people free and make peace. All the people who were listening wanted the wall to be taken down. Ronald Reagan inspired so many people that day and made many wonder what life would be like if the wall was destoryed. The most famous part in Reagan's speech was when he actually told Gorbechev to take down the wall. Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" That is the most famous part of his speech.

Effects Of The Speech

Ronald Reagan's speech touched and inspired many people. Many people believe that Reagan's speech was the main reason the wall was taken down. Even though the speech did take a big part in the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the situation was put off for two more years. After two years in 1989, Berlin's government finally brought back the situation and they decided to take down the wall. The speech also inspired people to protest, which probably was another big reason why the government decided to take down the wall. All in all, the speech played a big part in the destruction of the Berlin Wall.
